This route takes in to the Tour de la Molière, the preserved remains of an imposing castle and mediaeval town standing on the hillside.
As you leave Cheyres, head north-east towards the vineyards. After you leave the villas area, take a narrow path with lots of steps to the oratory of St-Joseph and then Bonne-Fontaine. The path continues towards the Vounaise until it reaches the Tour de la Molière, the only preserved remains of an imposing castle and mediaeval town built in the 12th century. On clear days, there are magnificent views over the Jura and lakes Neuchâtel, Murten and Bienne from the top of the tower. Not far from the ruins, there is still a quarry from which Molière stone is extracted. The return to Cheyres takes you through the fields, with some fine views over the Grande Cariçaie from the Haut Carro. The final section heads down through the forest.
Tip: if you want to visit the tower, make sure you check the opening times published on www.tourdelamoliere.ch. The picnic area at the foot of the tower is extremely well laid out.
