Chilchmatt in Oberbüren has been settled since the Bronze Age and was a significant pilgrimage site in the late Middle Ages.

Stillborn babies were "brought back to life" in front of the miraculous picture of the Virgin Mary in the church. They were then baptised to protect them from the Middle Ages concept of eternal damnation. A work of art by the artist Gunter Frentzel called "The Feather" graces the square, which was designed by landscape architect Toni Weber on the site where the church once stood. The powerful artwork gives this historically impressive place a future and invites the viewer to stop and reflect.
