Guided tour on the theme of modernism (Bauhaus) in Biel's railway station district.
Why is modernism so important in Biel's architecture? Modernism became popular thanks to the BAUHAUS art school founded in Weimar in 1919. It influenced architecture, design, art and fashion. In 1921, the social democrat Guido Müller became mayor of the city of Biel and single-mindedly promoted modernism in Biel. In 1923, the railway station was moved to its current location, giving Biel over 90,000 m² of building land in a prime location. The result was an entire modernist neighbourhood that makes Biel unique.
During this guided tour, you will discover the quality and realisation of the set goal of creating a more social, fairer society through iconic buildings and other elements in the public space (stairwells, inner courtyards)
