Guided tour on the theme of modernism (Bauhaus) in Biel
Did you know? After Tel Aviv, Biel/Bienne is the city with the most buildings in the Bauhaus architectural style, which is also known as “Neues Bauen” (New Building). Bauhaus was founded in 1919 and exerted its influence upon architecture, design, art and fashion. In 1921, the Social Democrat Guido Müller became mayor of the city of Biel/Bienne and resolutely promoted modernity there. In 1923, the train station was moved to its current location, giving Biel/Bienne more than 90,000 m² of building land in a prime location. This is how an entire district came about in the modern style, and it makes Biel/Bienne unique.
On this guided tour, you discover the quality and realisation of the objective that was set: creating a more social and just society through iconic buildings and other features in public spaces (stairwells and courtyards).
